Description
Pandas celebrating Easter
-----
Today most people do not imagine Easter without Easter eggs. In Lithuania, an Easter egg was first mentioned in a book ''St. Ambraziejus's psalms'' by Martynas Mazvydas. An egg has the same symbolic meaning of life as a grain. They both symbolize the beginning of a new life. At the beginning Lithuanians used to decorate eggs not only for Easter but for other Christian festivals such as Jurgines and Sekmines as well. So, there is an opinion that an Easter eggs is a part of pre-Christian culture.
-----
Hundreds of years ago Easter eggs were colored using natural dyes such as onion shells, tree moss, cornflower and chamomile blossoms, beetroots, rye shoots, birch leaves, black alder bark.
These days it is popular to use stamping technique. Various plants or parts of them are put on an egg. Then it is firmly wrapped with a piece of cloth and boiled together with dyes.
The photo shows my favorite Marbling technique, which is quite similar to stamping. Various materials such as paper pieces, onion shells, leaves etc. are messily put on an egg and later firmly wrapped with a piece of cloth and boiled.
