Description
Lithuania. Silute Train Station. 2008
-----
In this photo you see one of the latest trains from 20th century Lithuania, the last "soviet era" train arriving to the station of my hometown Silute. In 2008 we had new Euro style trains running already but these old guys still in use.
-----
The railway station building itself is very old too, even older than the train. It was built while Silute was still a part of Germany (Prussia) and called Heydekrug. Šilutė's origin dates to an inn (Krug) catering for travelers and their horses which was located halfway between Memel and Tilsit. The German name of Heydekrug referred to a Krug (an archaic word for inn) in the Heide (heathland). The inn was known in for the most inhabitants of the region speaking the Memelland-Samogitian dialect Šilokarčema. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Šilutė )
